I’ve traveled around the world with my kids — from Europe to Central America, from Dubai to Thailand, from long road trips, camping adventures to endless flights — and I can tell you one thing: traveling with children is not hard.
What’s hard is the mindset of the parents.
This post comes straight from my own experience. It’s not a “perfect family travel guide.” It’s a real one — written by a mom who’s seen it all, from diaper blowouts to 10-hour flights with a toddler.
Because traveling with kids isn’t chaos — unless you decide it is.
Children don’t plan. They don’t overthink. They don’t care about itineraries or weather forecasts. They simply exist in the moment.
It’s us, the adults, who complicate things.
I’ve seen it on every trip — parents packing like they’re moving houses, stressing over nap times and snack schedules, running after perfection while forgetting to breathe.
But the truth? Kids are adaptable.
If you stay calm, they stay calm. If you’re excited, they’ll be excited too.
So here’s my rule: less planning, more presence.

Yes, you should be prepared — but not to the point of insanity.
I travel light, even with a child, because all a kid really needs is to be:
fed, warm, dry, loved, and entertained.
Here’s my simple parent survival kit that works for every destination:
💛 Fever syrup and something for motion sickness
💛 A few plasters (because knees happen)
💛 Wet wipes and sanitizer (because kids touch everything)
💛 A water bottle and light snacks
💛 Their favorite small toy, coloring book, or stuffed animal
💛 A tablet or phone with downloaded cartoons (never rely on airplane screens!)
💛 A light blanket or hoodie
💛 Headphones for kids
And that’s it. You don’t need a pharmacy, a full wardrobe, or 12 meals packed in Tupperware. The lighter you travel, the more you’ll enjoy the journey.

People often ask me, “When’s the best time to start traveling with kids?”
Here’s my honest answer: anytime.
Babies, toddlers, teens — they all bring something special to the adventure.
There’s no magic age when travel becomes “easy.” It becomes easy the moment you stop believing it’s hard.
If your child is tired, they’ll cry. If they’re happy, they’ll laugh. That’s life. It’s not a failure of parenting — it’s just being human.

Before you go anywhere, double-check your child’s passport. Children’s passports expire much faster than adult ones.
And please — don’t travel without insurance.
If you’re from Europe, you already have basic medical coverage through the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), which allows you to access public healthcare in other EU countries.
However, it only covers emergencies in public hospitals — not private care, medical evacuation, or trip interruptions. That’s why having extra travel insurance is still important.
Some banks also include accident or travel insurance within their paid plans — for example, Revolut offers travel insurance in selected packages. But if your bank doesn’t include it, you can easily arrange coverage in just a few minutes with one of these trusted options:
💛 Ekta Travel Insurance – quick to set up, affordable, and covers both medical expenses and trip interruptions. Perfect for families who travel often.
💛 International Citizens Insurance – great for long-term travelers or expats, offering flexible global coverage that includes families and children.
💛 VisitorsCoverage – one of the most reputable international travel insurance marketplaces, where you can compare different policies and choose the one that fits your trip best.
Having travel insurance means you won’t spend your vacation sitting in an emergency room doing math in your head.
It’s peace of mind — and that’s priceless.

Let’s be real. Long flights with kids can feel like a marathon.
But they don’t have to be a nightmare.
Dress them in layers (planes are unpredictable), bring a small pillow or neck support, and never underestimate the power of snacks.
If they cry, they cry.
No one’s judging you — and if they are, that’s their problem.
Whenever I can, I use airport lounges — especially for long layovers. They’re quiet, have food, sometimes even play areas. Your child can stretch, eat, and relax before the next flight. Way better than juggling juice boxes at a crowded gate.
And here’s a little travel hack I swear by:
If you don’t already have a business-class ticket, you can still access lounges with Priority Pass, which gives you entry to hundreds of lounges around the world. I personally use mine through Revolut, where you can pay a small extra fee and get lounge access even if you’re flying economy.
Trust me — it’s worth every cent.
Lounges are a game-changer for parents: calm, quiet, clean, and full of food. Many even have play areas, showers, and comfy chairs where kids can nap. It’s a total upgrade from sitting in a noisy terminal surrounded by tired travelers and rolling suitcases.
If you’ve got a long wait ahead, give yourself that comfort. It makes the whole journey smoother — for you and your little one.

If you ever find yourself on a long layover with your kids — maybe your connecting flight isn’t for hours — do yourself a favor and drop the bags. Traveling with children is already enough of a workout; you don’t need to drag suitcases through the city, too.
Many big airports now offer luggage storage areas where you can safely leave your bags right at the terminal and head out for a mini adventure. It’s the perfect way to make the most of your time — stretch your legs, grab some food, and show your child a new city, even if it’s just for a few hours.
And if you’re already in town, maybe you’ve checked out of your hotel or your Airbnb but still have hours before your flight — there’s a simple solution:
They have hundreds of secure luggage drop-off points all over the world — at shops, cafés, and train stations. You just book online, drop your luggage for a few euros per day, and go explore hands-free.
I’ve used it myself, and it’s such a relief. You can walk around, have lunch, or visit a museum without worrying about your bags — or chasing a toddler with a suitcase in one hand.
Travel light, explore freely, and enjoy every moment — because travel with kids should feel like an adventure, not an obstacle course. 🌍

We’ve done some epic ones:
Slovenia to the Amalfi Coast, Slovenia to Switzerland to Nice through Mont Blanc, Bangkok to Phuket, Rayong and Kanchanaburi, Dubai road adventures… and every single one turned out great.
Here’s what I’ve learned:
🚗 Always request a proper child seat when renting a car. In places like Sicily, it’s a must.
🚗 Try not to place kids directly behind the driver (in emergencies, instincts kick in for what’s beside you).
🚗 Make frequent stops, play music, and let them stretch.
Some of our best memories happened between destinations — laughing, singing, watching the world roll by.

We usually rent a car — and honestly, we’ve never had a single problem. It gives us the freedom to explore at our own pace, stop wherever we want, and make the journey part of the adventure.
There’s just one thing to watch out for:
When renting a car, companies will often try to sell you their own insurance package. Don’t fall for it without checking first! In many cases, you’re already covered — either through your travel insurance, bank card, or even accident policy. Buying another layer of insurance at the counter can mean paying for the same thing twice (or even three times).
If you’re looking for trusted rental car partners, these are my top recommendations — I’ve personally used them, and they’ve always been reliable and transparent:
🚗 Booking Rental Cars – easy to use, great rates, and a wide selection of vehicles across Europe and beyond.
🚗 EconomyBookings.com – excellent for comparing offers from multiple rental companies in one place, often with lower deposits.
🚗 GetRentacar.com – flexible platform with verified partners and affordable family car options, ideal for long road trips.
Always read the fine print, take photos of the car before you drive off, and keep a copy of your insurance details handy. But other than that — renting a car with kids is pure freedom.
Some of our best memories were made with music on, snacks ready, and no fixed plans — just the open road ahead. 🌍

Because yes, you will forget something. And that’s okay.
🧳 Travel documents + insurance
🧳 First-aid pouch
🧳 Reusable water bottles
🧳 Snacks (healthy + one guilty pleasure)
🧳 Extra clothes for everyone
🧳 Toys, crayons, or cards
🧳 Wet wipes + sanitizer
🧳 Sunscreen + hats aaannnnd Anty mosquito spray
🧳 A small travel pillow or blanket
🧳 Good vibes and patience
That last one is non-negotiable. 😄

When booking, make sure the hotel isn’t “adults only” (been there, done that, awkward).
Platforms like Expedia and Booking.com let you filter family-friendly options easily. You can check my hotel recommendations here.
For activities, GetYourGuide is my go-to — you can check reviews to see if something is good for kids before booking.
And don’t forget: many hotels now offer kids’ clubs or babysitting, so you can still sneak away for a massage or a quiet dinner without guilt.

Here’s the truth — and it might sting a little: most of the drama around traveling with kids doesn’t come from the kids. It comes from us.
I’ve met parents who plan every five minutes of the day, moms who overthink every snack and outfit, and dads who lose their minds over nap times. And honestly? It’s exhausting to watch.
Traveling with kids doesn’t need to be a military operation.
Feed them. Keep them warm. Let them rest. Offer some fun. That’s all a child really needs.
The rest? It’s mindset.
If you believe it’s going to be hard — it will be.
If you believe it’s going to be fun — it will be magical.
Your child doesn’t need perfection. They need you — calm, present, smiling, and open to adventure.

People love to say “Traveling with kids isn’t a real vacation.”
Well, I disagree.
It’s different — yes.
You might not spend hours lying by the pool reading a book in silence. But you’ll laugh more. You’ll notice more. You’ll connect more.
You’ll watch your child see the ocean for the first time, eat gelato in Italy, feed elephants in Thailand, or dance barefoot in the rain.
And one day, when they’re grown, you’ll realize — those messy, funny, exhausting trips were the best vacations of your life. 🌍

This article isn’t about being the perfect parent.
It’s just my perspective — the things I’ve seen, felt, and learned from traveling the world with my children.
Every family is different. Every child is different.
But one thing I’ve learned again and again is this: when you shift your mindset, everything else falls into place.
So pack light. Breathe deeply. Smile often.
And go — explore the world together. Because these years won’t last forever.
