Can you imagine how our parents or grandparents used to travel? Travel agencies, thick paper catalogs, endless phone calls to hotels, and stacks of cash in their wallets. Sounds exhausting, right?

Today, things are completely different. We literally have the whole world in our hands – on our phones. From booking flights to paying with a single tap, traveling has never been this easy, simple, and fun.

And here’s the thing: I don’t like to overcomplicate. For me, travel should be light and enjoyable. I don’t plan months ahead – instead, I go with the flow and organize things as I go. And with all the amazing apps we have today, that’s totally possible.

Firefly truth: The world feels big, but with the right tools, it can fit in your pocket.

Meet the Traveler Behind Firefly ✈️

I’m originally from a small but beautiful country in Europe – Slovenia. I’ll definitely write more about it in the future, because it’s one of those magical little places that deserves more attention.

A few years ago, we made a bold decision: to leave our home and move abroad. Back then, our son was only four years old, and of course, we were not traveling alone – with us was our BFF, a little Yorkshire terrier named Daisy. So we quit our jobs, packed our bags, and started a brand-new chapter – living from country to country and discovering the world one step at a time.

How I Prepare for My Trips (in My Own Way)

Booking accommodations 🏡✨

Most of the time, I use Expedia, Booking, Agoda or sometimes Airbnb. They give me a huge selection, clear filters by price and location, and flexible cancellation policies – which is a lifesaver.

But here’s another trick I love: I often book much cheaper through Revolut. Since I always pay with my Revolut card, I collect points, and later I can use them to save money on reservations. Sometimes I’ve saved over €500 on a single booking just by using my points. It’s such an easy way to cut costs while traveling.

When I’m in a city, I usually go for a hotel or a small apartment. On road trips, though, Airbnb is my favorite – I love finding unique places like cozy cottages, studios, or even whole apartments with amazing views.

That said, I also like to check direct bookings with hotels or apartments. In some countries, going direct can actually be cheaper since there’s no middleman. But here’s the catch: you need to be careful. Always read plenty of reviews (Google reviews are a good start) and double-check if the place is legit. Sadly, fake reviews are still a thing – so better safe than sorry.

Firefly note: A cozy home base is where every adventure begins. Choose wisely, because the right stay can make your trip unforgettable.

Payments 💳🌍

My absolute go-to tool when traveling is Revolut. It gives me a crystal-clear overview of my spending, the exchange rates are way better than at the bank, and the card works almost everywhere. If I pay in a foreign currency, I don’t stress about hidden fees. It’s just smooth and easy.

Firefly tip: Track your travel spending like a pro, so your memories stay priceless – not pricey.

Flights ✈️💡

For flights, I always double check with Kiwi, you can also book your flight on Booking.com and Expedia Flights or Google Flights. It’s fast, clear, and shows me the cheapest dates and routes in seconds. If I’m flexible with travel dates, I can save a lot of money. Sometimes I also use Revolut Points for discounts – we don’t have as many reward cards in Europe as in the US (hello, American Express ✋), but it’s still worth checking.

Firefly truth: Flexibility is your best friend – both in travel and in life.

Tours and activities 🎟️🌄

When it comes to tours and activities, my first stop are always Get Your Guide and Viator. Everything’s in one place, booking is quick, and I get instant confirmation right on my phone. I’ve booked everything from guided city tours to gondola rides and even adventure activities this way – safe, simple, and super convenient.

Firefly note: Collect moments, not things – the right experience will stay with you forever.

Staying Connected & Safe Online 🌍📶

Internet is non-negotiable when traveling – from maps to bookings and staying in touch. Here’s how I keep it simple and safe:

1. Be mindful of public Wi-Fi 🔒

It’s tempting to log into airport or café Wi-Fi, but it’s not always safe. That’s why I always use Nord VPN to protect my data when traveling.

✨ If you’re a Revolut Metal member, you actually get NordVPN for free – which is such a cool perk.

✨ And if you’re not, you can still grab an amazing deal here: Get 75% off NordVPN’s 2-year plan + 3 extra months 👉 NORD VPN

2. Travel SIM cards
I use Revolut eSIM, Saily or Airalo which is a lifesaver. You can buy it in the app, activate it in seconds, and stay connected almost anywhere – without scary roaming bills.

3. A spare phone for hotspot
I carry an old phone just for my travel SIM. That way, I can share internet with my main phone without draining its battery. It’s such a small hack, but it makes a huge difference.

Firefly tip: A little prep keeps you safe – because the best memories are the ones you share online later.

My Little Travel Hacks ✨

Photograph valuables: Before every trip, I snap photos of valuables (laptop, camera, watch). If something gets lost or stolen, it’s proof for insurance.

Offline access: Boarding passes, QR codes, maps – I save them offline, because internet isn’t always guaranteed.

Minimal planning: I don’t schedule every hour of every day. Travel feels better when there’s room for spontaneity.

A Real Example From Sicily 🚗🌞

When we went to Sicily, we booked an Airbnb with a kitchen, because I love having the freedom to cook simple meals when we travel as a family. We found cheap flights through Google Flights – almost half the price just by choosing different dates – and of course, paid with Revolut to avoid extra fees.

Once we arrived, we rented a car directly through Booking.com. It was fast and simple – and the best part is that my Revolut Metal plan already covers rental car insurance. That means no extra fees at the counter, no hidden surprises, and total peace of mind while driving around the island. But you can rent a car via Getrentacar.com.

With the car sorted, we explored charming coastal towns, hidden mountain villages, and of course, made a stop near Mount Etna. Driving through Sicily is an adventure on its own – and let me tell you, Palermo has one of the most chaotic traffic situations I’ve ever seen. It’s wild, but it’s also part of the experience that makes Sicily unforgettable.

For activities, we used Get Your Guide to book things like guided tours and day trips – everything confirmed instantly on my phone. Here is the link to enjoy Palermo before hitting the chaotic road. 😁

And the best part? I organized the entire trip in just one afternoon, with a coffee by my side. Google Docs helped me put together the whole itinerary – flights, Airbnb, rental car, tours – all in one place, easy to share and update. That’s exactly what I mean when I say traveling has never been easier.

What’s Next: Traveling With a Child 👶🐾

Most of the time, we travel with our son (and yes, with Daisy and Firenca too 🐾).

Many people ask me how it really is to travel with a child — and honestly, it’s an adventure of its own!

That’s why I created two separate blog posts:
💛 One all about traveling with a dog — full of practical tips and real experiences with Daisy & Firenca.

How I Share My Travels 📸✨

After every trip, I love to edit and organize my photos in Canva. It’s quick, simple, and lets me create beautiful visuals that I can instantly share on my blog or social media. For me, it’s not just about keeping memories – it’s about turning them into little stories that inspire others to travel too.

If you’d like to see more of my travel creations, feel free to check out my Canva projects and designs – they’re part of my everyday travel routine.

And if you have any specific questions about traveling – whether it’s planning, apps, money tips, or even traveling with kids – you can book a 1-hour consultation with me. I’ll be happy to share my best advice and help you plan your own stress-free adventures.

Firefly note: Your journey is unique – sometimes all it takes is the right spark to light the way.

🌍 Don’t Forget Travel Insurance ✨

It’s so easy to get caught up in packing, flights, and excitement… and completely forget about travel insurance.

But trust me — it’s one of the most important things you can have on any trip. A single medical bill or lost luggage can turn your dream holiday into a nightmare.

Before every adventure, I always make sure I’m covered — whether it’s a short getaway or a long journey abroad.
